Sphere will bring together experts from around the world to discuss their experience of integrating humanitarian standards into simulation and table-top exercises in disaster response training.

What works? What doesn’t? Where can we improve?

The webinar will be led by Sphere trainer Aya Yagan, who will share her experience of facilitating Sphere’s new table-top exercise for urban settings.

Speakers will include:

Vlatko Jovanovsky, DPPI-SEE (Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Initiative – South Eastern Europe) and Haris Magrdžija, Red Cross Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Lessons Learnt from FLEX 2023:

DPPI FLEX 2023 was a full scale simulation exercise with teams from 10 DPPI SEE countries, responding to a flood scenario in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Teams focused on three main areas: applying Sphere standards in camp management, drone flying operations and logistics. A key objective of this 5-day field exercise was to test regional interoperability among the disaster response teams within the wider framework of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, bringing together the civil protection and humanitarian aid arms of DG-ECHO.

Phil Crook and Patrick Dresch, The Simex Series, UK

Lessons Learnt from SIMEX 2023:

The SIMEX Series is the UK’s largest annual international disaster response exercise and started in 2012. The exercise comprises a mix of live, simulation and command and control events in order to provide a neutral platform to test both national and international emergency response mechanisms. The overall aims of the exercise are: developing international and national response capacity; promoting coordinated humanitarian assistance and emergency response; evaluating disaster management systems presented by the participating organisations. The exercise includes a full-day tabletop exercise and Sphere workshops for disaster management students from several UK universities.
