About Joseph Muyambo

I am a professional adult educator with a policy design and implementation background. I have 24 years of professional local and international experience in programme management, capacity building, disaster management and organisational development. During my 11 years (1988-2000) period at Zimbabwe Red Cross Societ, I was responsible for disaster management and coordination and I responded to the following among others, Mozambique refugees, Drought, Cholera operations, El-Nino floods of 2000.

Being a Sphere trainer, I was co-founder, architect and trainer of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Regional Office for Southern Africa’ Regional Disaster Response Teams (RDRT) between 2001/10. These teams would act as resource persons for their national societies and governments and be deployed to any disasters in the region. Between 2000/4 facilitated the implementation of Sphere Minimum Standards in the Refugee camps in Namibia for Angolans and Malawi for DRC. I helped established the disaster management dept for South Africa Red Cross 2007-2010 and trained the staff in Sphere Minimum Standards.

I have jointly facilitated and carried out mass population vulnerability capacity assessments for South Africa Red Cross and coordinated the management teams in response to the 2008 urban violence on foreign nationals and Zimbabwean Cholera operation of 2009. Of recent I have supported Swaziland Red Cross society in drawing-up a Disaster Management Master Plan and Policy for Swaziland Red Cross (January to April) 2011. Turn-around Strategy (Recovery Plan), Strategic Plan, Bi-annual Operational Plan.

I have in the last ten years been working and mentoring senior leaders and managers of Red Cross Societies in Southern Africa and parts of East Africa such as Governing Boards members and their Secretary Generals towards the internal and external improvement of their organizations’ performance and accountability. My skills are in initiating and driving change process and turnaround strategies, organisational wide strategic and operational planning, performance and accountability as well as encouraging learning through knowledge sharing.
