After three years at the helm of Sphere and its global humanitarian community, Dr Balwant Singh has decided to leave his role as Executive Director in early September to pursue other interests.
Balwant’s leadership of Sphere over the last three years has included the development and implementation of a new five-year strategy; revision of its governance and membership structures; transformation of services to deliver on its commitments throughout the COVID pandemic; strengthening relationships with new and existing donors; establishing the Humanitarian Standards Partnership hosted by Sphere as the convenor and leader for humanitarian standards; joint stewardship to launch the revision of the Core Humanitarian Standard; initiating support for local organisations responding to the Ukraine crisis; and growth of its global community of members, focal points, trainers and other champions.
Dr Singh said: “I have used Sphere Standards since they were established 25 years ago. It was an honour to be asked to lead the organisation into a new chapter three years ago. The role has been rewarding, and given me insights into the humanitarian sector and where it could evolve further. I have had the pleasure of working with a talented and committed team, and with our network of members and focal points, who are equally passionate about quality and accountability in the sector.
“I wish the team, the board and the Sphere community all the best as they continue supporting responses to an almost predictable pattern of complex and protracted crises across the globe.”
Sphere President, Rita Rhayem, said: “On behalf of Sphere’s governing board, I would like to thank Balwant for his contributions, leadership and professionalism in serving our global community over the past three years.
“Sphere has thrived in this period, reaching more members and humanitarian practioners as they respond to new and ongoing crises. We are grateful to Balwant and the Sphere team for successfully steering the organisation through the COVID pandemic and we wish Balwant the very best in his future endeavours.”
The board has commenced recruitment for the role of Executive Director and will ensure a smooth transition of leadership. In the interim, we will ensure the important work of Sphere continues as planned and we meet our obligations and commitments to Sphere members and other stakeholders.
