The Benevolence Standards Working Group (BSWG) was informally established in 2018 as a joint initiative by four organizations, each of whom plays a unique and leading role in different aspects of the humanitarian response in mainland China.
1. The Amity Foundation as one of the earliest established NGOs in China has worked actively in development and humanitarian aid for over three decades. It operates in China but also responds to many disasters in other countries around the world.
2. Showyou is known as one of the most important organizers of Sphere trainings with expertise both in training coordination and practice on WASH during emergencies as well as in rural development in China.
3. The Disaster Relief Committee is the biggest platform for Chinese NGOs that plays a significant role in capacity building, establishment of coordination mechanism and bridging Chinese resources in and out of China for emergency responses.
4. Zhuoming Information Aid is the first disaster information service organization in the country and plays an important role in raising public awareness at grassroot level. Over the last years it has been mainstreaming relevant international humanitarian standards, including Sphere principles, both locally and abroad, contributing to bridge information gaps on topics related to disasters and humanitarian actions.
The aim of the BSWG is to build up a common language and reference system for disaster relief coordination through promoting contextualization and application of Sphere standards in China as well as to improve the quality and accountability of disaster responses.
The Working Group has lately been focusing its work on the localization of Sphere standards; delivery of Sphere trainings and ToTs programs for local partners while exploring the setting up of a coordination platform for disaster relief.
